Cherie: Today we are going to start inside the Mission Trails Nature and Interpretive Center where we will be conducting a field test using a Global Positioning System Unit, or GPS.
a
Greg: Now, for those of you who aren't familiar with the GPS-with just the press of a button, a GPS unit can almost instantly show us our present position.
a
Cherie: With a GPS and a topographical map we can pinpoint our location anywhere in the World within 100 feet.
a
Greg: The GPS unit cannot only be used to save time but it can be used to save your live should you get lost or encounter bad weather conditions.
a
Cherie: S & R teams and the military have been using GPS technology for a while now. Recently, however, the GPS has become available for adventurers like you and me.
a
Greg: So let's test this baby out!

History

I was born and raised in the beautiful Northern California wine county of Sonoma County. It was there were I became a true outdoors man and sports enthusiast (49er faithful). I attended grades k-12 and 2 1/2 years of Junior College at the Santa Rosa J.C. before traveling south to sunny San Diego to finish my college education at San Diego State University. I obtained both my Business Administration degree and Speech Communication degree after my final 2 years of study.

Interests

I played competitive "street football" with my neighborhood home boys up until the 7th grade when I became old enough to put the pads on and play the real deal--tackle football. I continued playing through my senior
year as a defensive back and wide receiver (unfortunately, at 165 pounds and average talent, the college scouts weren't knocking down my door). My families annual camping and fishing trips in the Northern California
wilderness exposed me at an early age to the beauty of the outdoors. However, scuba diving has truly captured my heart. My most recent dive was 100 feet below the surface in absolute darkness off the coast of Belize where we encountered a 3 foot hungry reef crab. Whether it be camping, hiking, white-water rafting or scuba diving, I am always up for adventure. My favorite indoor hobby includes reading, reading, reading and reading!!!

Favorite Outdoor Adventure Spots

My favorite place in the world is 100 feet below the surface. I highly recommend the Cayman Islands and Belize. Both offer incredible dive sites and beautiful under water environments. Sting Ray City off the Grand Cayman coast is a must do. A night dive "outside" the reef of Belize is also a must. Other favorite spots include the jungles of Costa Rica and the Mendocino Coast. The two day white water rafting trip on the Pacquari river in Costa Rica is one of the most intense and breath taking experiences of my life. I highly recommend it!!! For those of you not interest in the underwater experience or the intense rapids of the Pacquari, the beaches of Belize, Greece and Costa Rica offer a great place to relax.

History

I am what they call a true "Southern California Gal." Raised in La Habra Hts., California (the place of the first Haas avocado) I graduated 4th in my class at Sonora High School and then went on to the University of California at Santa Barbara, where I graduated with a Biological Science Degree. Currently, I am in the Educational Technology Master's program at SDSU where I am focusing on instructional design and multimedia / video production & programming.

Interests

Growing up, I was what they referred to as a "Tomboy" at heart. I competitively swam for 11 years and preferred any outdoor activity over any shopping mall as I got older. I am a big sports fan and a connoisseur of outdoor adventure. My outdoor experiences and travel started when I was very young and have only continued to grow. Whether it be camping, skiing or white-water river rafting I am always up for a challenge. My favorite indoor hobbies include searching for the perfect microbrew, creating multimedia programs, and watching the X-files on TV.

Favorite Outdoor Adventure Spots

On the tamer side, or for those interested in a relaxing and breath-taking experience, I highly recommend Banff and Jasper National Parks located just outside Calgary, Alberta, Canada. My husband and I spent 10 days there and never wanted to leave. If your into backcountry hiking, rafting, or simply relaxing on a canoe, the Canadian Rockies are a must see. A short car ride from Calgary will transport you into a majestic place of beauty. Lake Louise will truly take your breath away. A place where big-horn sheep stand on the side of the road and water flows all around the countryside.

For those of you wanting a little more adventure, I recommend the jungles of Costa Rica. In Costa Rica the jungle cruise at Disneyland becomes a reality. Surrounded by crocodiles, sloths, monkeys, and exotic birds, you will feel like you are at a zoo without cages. Imagine hiking with monkeys swinging in the trees above you and toucans flying beside you. The white-water rafting is spectacular. The Pacquari river gives new meaning to the phase"Wet &Wild."
